  • Ned Crawford ('09)
  • Daisha Stone ('10)
  • Dylan Adams ('09)

They were inducted by co-presidents Thomas Howard (’09) and Matthew Gizzi (’09). Ned, Daisha and Dylan join 25 other current and former MLWGS students who were previously honored with membership.

The purpose of the International Thespian Society is the advancement of excellence in educational theater and the continuing enrichment of theater arts and their appreciation worldwide. To become a candidate and eligible for membership, a student of drama must earn 30 points through service to the Drama Department. Students are encouraged to earn points in more than one area of production or performance. Each point represents ten hours of quality work; therefore, each candidate has given over 300 hours of service to the Drama Department.

Chorus Students Excel At All-District Chorus Weekend

from Smoke & Scales:

MLWGS was well-represented at this year's VMEA All-District Chorus. Freshman Alex Georgiadis, Caitlin Lane and Kristina Ravensbergen and Sophomore Lizzie Barnett placed in the top tier of over 1,000 students in District I registered who auditioned last November.

For several weeks, these students prepared rigorously learning new music for the Feb. 13-14th workshop and concert held at Hanover HS. Guest conductor Lynnel Joy Jenkins, a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at University of Arizona, traveled to Richmond to lead the District I Women's Choir, in which all four of these students placed.

Lizzie Barnett and Kristina Ravensbergen were selected by the conductor to sing solo descant parts in a Moravian mountain song, entitled Hoj, Hura Hoj, during the recorded concert! Bravissima, Ladies!

Student One-Acts Festival

from Smoke & Scales:

They're short. They're sweet. They're intimate. No, not that kind of intimate, but the black-box theater kind of intimate. Plays that get under your skin and itch for a little while, but the scratching feels oh, so, good when the directors, actors and producers are MLWGS students.

Join directors Chris Richardson, Noah Downs, Kasia Clark, Matthew Gizzi, Sicily Stump, Ally Mitchem and Ted Westrick in productions of these five short plays featuring thirty MLWGS students:
  • Degas C'est Moi
  • Bedtime Story
  • Echo
  • Always
  • Romeo & Juliet Redux (written by Noah Downs)
Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 19, 20 and 21, at 7:00pm at the Black Box Theater, Maggie L. Walker Governor's School Entrance from the Courtyard (Elizabeth Street parking lot).

Students Earn 11 Top Ten Finishes at Latin League Convention

from Smoke & Scales:

This past November, the 23rd and 24th, seven Maggie L. Walker Governor's School students participated in Virginia Junior Classical League Latin Convention. This year MLWGS students won 11 top ten finishes which included 1 first place ribbon.

Chris Anders (Chesterfield '09) won 7th place in level 4 reading comprehension; Elizabeth Ballou (Richmond '12) scored 4 top ten finishes including 4th place in Mythology and Reading Comprehension, a 5th place in Derivatives, and 7th place in Latin Grammar; Jake Davis (Chesterfield '10) had 3 top ten finishes which included 3rd place in Reading Comprehension Prose and Reading Comprehension Poetry and Jake had a 9th place finish in Latin Grammar; Adam Powers (Chesterfield '10), who attended last year's convention as well, won 9th place in Reading Comprehension; Annali Slyder (Richmond '12) likewise scored 9th place in Level 2 Reading Comprehension; HanLu Ye (Chesterfield '09) had 4 top ten finishes which included a 3rd place in Reading Comprehension Prose, 4th place in Reading Comprehension Poetry and Latin Grammar, and HanLu won 1st place in 12th Grade Art.

The most important aspect about Latin Convention is the fun these students have with a host of other high school Latin students, including many from our students' home schools. As always the highlights include the traditional Roman Banquet for which students dress in Roman togas (often created out of hotel bed sheets), Karaoke and the Sunday evening dance. Mr. Ross, as usual, spoils the students by serving pizza and other party food as a late night hotel snack. Our students awake to a breakfast of donuts, the breakfast of Latin champions.

Alumna Helps Launch Satellite

Stacie Naumann '96 is working for Lockheed Martin out in California, and one of her current projects is the launching of a satellite. Here's what Stacie wrote about the project:

My title for the launch is the Spacecraft Systems Engineer (SSE) -- my duties are to oversee all of the subsystem telemetry to ensure there are no problems during the countdown. When it's not launch time, I am an engineer for the Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem (ADACS), which keeps the satellite is in the correct orbit and makes sure the satellite is oriented correctly (with the instruments pointed at the earth).

Our satellite is called NOAA-N Prime, which is a polar orbiting weather satellite. Our payload contains several different instruments to measure things like weather, ozone depletion and also has a search and rescue instrument that helps rescue people lost at sea or while hiking.

For more information about the launch, please see http://goespoes.gsfc.nasa.gov/poes/index.html.

Alumni Profile: Jesse King '04

1. What's going on right now? I just finished a guard shift at a Joint Security Site, an Iraqi police station where we have a base, We are preparing for Iraqi elections tomorrow, (Jan. 31.)

2. What's your job?
I'm an infantryman for the U.S. Army, stationed with 2nd platoon, A Troop, 5-73rd Cavalry Regiment, out of Ft. Bragg, N.C. We are now deployed to the Rusafa district in Baghdad. Rusafa is pretty much the heart of Baghdad, with the two largest markets in Iraq, Shorja and Sadria, and almost all the Iraqi Ministries.

3. What's it like?
This will sound bad but, well, it sucks being here, our living conditions started out horrible, but in the two months we've been here, we've done much to improve the police station where we stay. I enjoy my job and at the same time hate every minute of it. It's just one of those things that you have to complain about, but wouldn't change it for anything. We patrol, on foot and in the Humvee, five out of nine days. Of the other four, one is for maintenance, and the other are guard shifts. As far as the heat, it's been cold here, go figure. However, it's starting to warm up.

4. What's the best and worst?
The best thing is definitely my fellow soldiers in my platoon. The worst is a combination of the smell and lack of sleep. The smell stems from all the trash, which is everywhere; you almost have to see it to believe it.

5. How did the Governor's School help prepare you for this tough job?
The Governor's School can't really help out too much preparing someone to be an infantryman, but I do think the atmosphere of tolerance at school has really helped in accepting and understanding the culture and people of Iraq. All the language classes have helped my communications with the Iraqis as well.

One of the highlights for US soldiers is receiving mail, so a letter or post card can make a day:
PFC King, Jesse T. or Bravo Section
