Students Earn 11 Top Ten Finishes at Latin League Convention

from Smoke & Scales:

This past November, the 23rd and 24th, seven Maggie L. Walker Governor's School students participated in Virginia Junior Classical League Latin Convention. This year MLWGS students won 11 top ten finishes which included 1 first place ribbon.

Chris Anders (Chesterfield '09) won 7th place in level 4 reading comprehension; Elizabeth Ballou (Richmond '12) scored 4 top ten finishes including 4th place in Mythology and Reading Comprehension, a 5th place in Derivatives, and 7th place in Latin Grammar; Jake Davis (Chesterfield '10) had 3 top ten finishes which included 3rd place in Reading Comprehension Prose and Reading Comprehension Poetry and Jake had a 9th place finish in Latin Grammar; Adam Powers (Chesterfield '10), who attended last year's convention as well, won 9th place in Reading Comprehension; Annali Slyder (Richmond '12) likewise scored 9th place in Level 2 Reading Comprehension; HanLu Ye (Chesterfield '09) had 4 top ten finishes which included a 3rd place in Reading Comprehension Prose, 4th place in Reading Comprehension Poetry and Latin Grammar, and HanLu won 1st place in 12th Grade Art.

The most important aspect about Latin Convention is the fun these students have with a host of other high school Latin students, including many from our students' home schools. As always the highlights include the traditional Roman Banquet for which students dress in Roman togas (often created out of hotel bed sheets), Karaoke and the Sunday evening dance. Mr. Ross, as usual, spoils the students by serving pizza and other party food as a late night hotel snack. Our students awake to a breakfast of donuts, the breakfast of Latin champions.
